The company was founded in 1891 as Maskinfabriks AB Scania in the city of Malmö in southern Sweden. Scania is the Latin form for the Swedish province of Skåne. In 1911 Scania merged with another automaker, Vagnsfabriks Aktiebolaget i Södertälje (VABIS) from Södertälje to form AB Scania-Vabis. In 1969 Scania-Vabis merged with Saab to form the Saab-Scania AB group. In 1995 the union was dissolved and Scania was renamed just Scania AB.
In 2011, the Volkswagen Group buys Scania for €6.7 billion.
