Fakaalofa lahi atu,
Welcome to Fakaako e Vagahau Niue a learning resource and rallying point for you as you progress on your journey to learn more of Vagahau Niue, the Niuean language.
The Niuean people are a unique people with a rich history and a promising future. There are fewer than 50,000 people of Niuean descent scattered across the globe and under 2,000 remain on Niue Nukututaha. Central to our identity is Vagahau Niue, the Niuean language; but it is under threat because it is not being widely used and is not being passed on as gift to the next generation.
The development of this app is one of a number of activities underway designed to promote the use of the Niuean language.
We’ve included information on the Niue alphabet, everyday conversations, family, parts of the body, numbers, colours, villages, the calendar, seasons, sports, health, time, values, proverbs, and places of work. Also featured are an interactive map showing villages; and the singing of prayers and hymns.
Fakaako e Vagahau Niue features
- Synchronised narration in Niuean language
- Tap to hear pronunciation of Niuean words
- Record your own narration
“This app is designed to assist all learners of vagahau Niue. I hope that find the tool useful. The future of our language, our koloa uho is up to us. We need to use the language and we need to share it with our children. Let us not permit our vagahau to be lost.”
Kia monuina
