New card game based on the popular African Spar card game
Spar is one of the most popular card games enjoyed in Ghana and several other countries in Africa. The point of the game is trick-taking without trumps – to win the game the player must win the last trick. 35 cards from a standard 52 card deck is used – the cards of each suit. The cards, from high to low, include Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6.
The player to the dealer’s left leads by laying one card, face up, in the center of the table. The other players in turn must play a card of the same suit if they can. Players who have no card of the suit led may play any card they choose. When all players have played one card, the first trick is complete. The player with the highest card of the suit is the winner of the trick. The cards played are not gathered in, but remain in the pile facing up. You play any card in your hand to begin the next trick, playing it face-up on top of the pile, and once again each player must play a card. Players who have no card of the suit led may play any card they choose. Play then continues until 5 tricks have been played.
