Roses and Spiritual Tradition:
Legend has it that the two Gods, Brahma (the creator) and Vishnu (the protector/preserver of life) who resided in the Himalayas, had an argument about which was the most beautiful flower- Brahma favored the lotus, and Vishnu, the rose.
But after seeing Vishnu’s celestial arbor laden with fragrant roses, Brahma acknowledged the supremacy of the rose.
Undoubtedly, these legends owe their origin to the fact that the Himalayas have about 15 different rose species, many of which were celebrated and discussed in Ayurveda texts for their healing properties.
Roses were so important, in fact, that they were mentioned in the Kama Sutra in 400 BC. It’s said a dutiful wife should grow flowers in order to help create the right ambiance for love.
From there, it was only a matter of time before such love of flowers spread across the world. India became a central hub in trade, and this trend didn’t end until British dominance in the 1600’s.
China, Britain, Europe, the mid east- all of them bought and sold Indian flowers.
