Mehndi is a traditional Hindu custom which is followed in India since Vedic time. Mehndi which is known as Henna in the western countries has been mentioned in Vedic ritual books.
During wedding Mehndi is the most important part of the bride make up. Married women apply Mehndi during Karwa Chauth, Gangaur, Ahoi Ashtami, Hariyali Teej, Hartalika Teej, Akha Teej, Bhai Dooj, Vat Savitri (Vat Purnima) and Gauri Puja festivals.
In Devanagari Mehandi is written as मेहन्दी. Mehndi is also spelled as Mehandi and Mehendi.
