Jazz is a form of musical art that originated in the United States through the confrontation of blacks with European music. The instrumentation, melody and harmony of jazz derive mainly from the musical tradition of the West. The rhythm, the phrasing and the production of sound, and the elements of harmony of blues are derived from African music and the musical concept of African-Americans.
Throughout its history, jazz has gone from being a simple folk dance music to an art form recognized throughout the world. Parallel to this progress, attitudes towards this music have also changed: in 1924 a New York Times journalist referred to it as the return of the music of the savages, while in 1987 the Congress of the United States of America declared the jazz as an outstanding model of expression and as an exceptional national treasure. It has been pointed out that the engine of this progress has been innovation, a particularity that has always been present in the history of this music, directing its evolution and characterizing the work of its most outstanding artists alongside a more traditionalist branch. Parallel to this dichotomy between innovation and tradition, jazz has moved among the work of artists who have only sought the recognition of a small but select audience and others who have directed their efforts to a wider audience.
The musical identity of jazz is complex and can not be easily delimited. First, although the term is often used to refer to a musical language as it is done, for example, when speaking of classical music, jazz is actually a family of musical genres that share common characteristics, but not individually represent the complexity of gender as a whole.
