Japan has a rich musical culture that includes a varied palette of traditional styles. Traditional Japanese music is known as hōgaku, while the word ongaku refers to music in general.
Two of the oldest styles are shōmyō, or "clear voice" and gagaku or orchestral court music. Both styles come from the Nara and Heian periods.
Gagaku is a type of classical music that has been performed in the Imperial Court since the Heian period. Kagurauta, Azumaasobi and Yamatouta are relatively indigenous repertoires. Tōgaku and Komagaku originated from the Tang Chinese dynasty by transmission through the Korean peninsula.
