Canvas are blank paintings with a cloth cover, which are generally white or can be colored as desired, used for painting. It can be used as a table on some wooden surfaces. Canvas; It consists of a piece of thick and painted cloth stretched over laths that are assembled together with a wide variety of geometric shapes. You can prepare your own canvas yourself, or you can get ready-made canvases in different sizes and qualities from art stores such as stationery.
It is used in canvas photography and painting prints, oil painting works, acrylic paint works.
You can also make canvas paintings yourself at home. For this;
First of all, you should decide what size canvas you want to prepare according to the picture you have chosen. The thickness of the smallest canvas frame should be 2x4 cm. The ratio of these dimensions increases as the size of the canvas increases. The reason for this is to prevent stretching due to the cloth to be stretched on it. The laths, which are cut to the size of the canvas and to the size suitable for the canvas, are cut and nailed or glued so that their corners are at an angle of 90 degrees to each other. In order to be stronger, it is first glued with glue and then attached to each other with thin long glass nails or thin screws without cracking the lath. It is necessary to grate the face of the canvas frame on which the cloth will be stretched, inclined inward. The reason for this is to prevent the painted surface from sticking to the wood and leaving a trace after painting. If we do not have the means to do all these operations, you can order the canvas frame to the carpenter.
The next step is to stretch the cloth onto the prepared canvas frame. However, great care should be taken in the selection of the cloth to be stretched to the canvas frame. The most suitable and widely used type of cloth is called calico and it should be thick. If we do not want our painting to attract dust like a magnet and get dirty in a short time, we should not choose the fiber type cloth type. The selected cloth is cut 5 cm more from the edges in addition to the canvas size. The canvas frame is centered on the cloth and started to be mounted on the board from the middle of the edges. Small-headed nails and fasteners can be used for this. The point you need to pay attention to here will be to mount the cloth by stretching it on the wood.
The final stage of canvas preparation is priming. This serves to destroy the absorbency of the fabric. The thinned plastic paint used as a primer closes the pores in the fabric texture and prepares the surface on which the paint will be applied. It is painted 2 or 3 layers with thinned plastic paint. After each painting, the surface is sanded with fine sandpaper. Applying diluted linseed oil on the topcoat is beneficial in reducing the absorbency of the fabric. Applying too much linseed oil can cause bleeding. From time to time, some artists may prefer to apply a coat of white oil paint over the primer before starting to paint. Our advice to you; For canvas lining, it is to dilute the mixture of white plastic paint and glue, turn it into a buttermilk consistency and apply it like that. It would be beneficial to apply 3 - 4 layers of primer. After the last two coats have dried, it should be sanded with fine sandpaper. It is also useful to apply 1 coat of paint on the back of the cloth. In this way, your canvas will be ready for painting.
