Surfing is not just about surfing the perfect wave. It is also about having the power and skills to paddle out to that perfect wave. Learn to time the waves, paddle though the break and position yourself behind the waves. When paddling out, timing is everything. You will need to duck dive and paddle while preserving your energy.
You don't want to be the one who paddled in the impact zone and went back home crying.
