Dictionary of Musical Theory

The free application "Dictionary of Musical Theory" is very friendly, it has a beautiful and simple interface. The best choice for a pocket dictionary that is always at hand. From which you can learn a lot of new and interesting things, for example, that:

Abacus Harmonicus
Abacus Harmonicus, or Abacum Arithmetico-Harmonicum is a table and tabular method described in Athanasius Kircher's comprehensive 1650 work on music, the Musurgia Vniversalis. The purpose is to generate counterpoint combinations. Also mentioned in early editions of the Encyclopædia Britannica, it is best described by the author's caption: "wonderful table that reveals all the secret art of counterpoint".

Bar (music)
In musical notation, a bar is a segment of time corresponding to a specific number of beats in which each beat is represented by a particular note value and the boundaries of the bar are indicated by vertical bar lines. Dividing music into bars provides regular reference points to pinpoint locations within a musical composition. It also makes written music easier to follow, since each bar of staff symbols can be read and played as a batch. Typically, a piece consists of several bars of the same length, and in modern musical notation the number of beats in each bar is specified at the beginning of the score by the time signature. In simple time,, the top figure indicates the number of beats per bar, while the bottom number indicates the note value of the beat.

Homorhythm
In music, homorhythm is a texture where there is a "sameness of rhythm in all parts" or "very similar rhythm" as would be used in simple hymn or chorale settings. Homorhythm is a condition of homophony. All voices sing the same rhythm. This texture results in a homophonic texture, which is a blocked chordal texture. Homorhythmic texture delivers lyrics with clarity and emphasis. Texture in which parts have different rhythms is heterorythmic or heterometric.
