A written record of the crochet pattern dates from the 1800s when it was displayed in the Dutch magazine Penelope in 1824. The Winter Gift, a publication in 1847 included a detailed account of the stitches used in crochet. It is believed that a crooked index finger is used instead of a link at this time to produce an exemplary design. During the Great Irish famine, Ursuline nuns (Catholic religious order) presented this work of art to local children and women. The cracked rope, which was easy to make, was popular at the time.
