Breathe Better: Beat Asthma is a patient engagement game, administered by members of the health care team, where players interact with and guide various characters who experience asthma symptoms. The game focuses on reinforcement of critical self-maintenance skills necessary for asthma patients to stay out of the hospital. Players help the various characters take their control and rescue medications at the appropriate times. Players need to watch out for triggers like animal dander, cold weather, physical exertion, strong chemical odors, and so on because they could negatively affect the character’s progress and might cause them to be admitted to the hospital. At the end of the game, patients are given feedback on their guidance of each character - whether they helped them take their medication at the appropriate times and whether or not they were admitted to the hospital.
Breathe Better: Beat Asthma was developed by UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Simcoach Games as part of a clinical study to evaluate the effectiveness of video-game-based interventions in patient education. The study is currently ongoing. The behavior demonstrated in this app is for narrative
purposes and features fictional characters. The care and treatment of pulmonary health issues is different for each patient. The user should derive proper treatment of pulmonary issues from their medical care providers, not this application. This app does not replace professional medical consultation and care.
