A romantic relationship is one of the closest we have as humans. Choosing a partner and staying together through life's twists and turns is rarely simple. When we choose to get to make it long term via marriage, kids etc unsurprisingly this only adds to the complexity.
Whether you have the odd tiff, full-blown arguments or you have simply stopped having fun - very few relationships exist conflict-free. When this (one of our most important relationships) begins to falter, our health and happiness often suffers. While for many of us our first instinct is to try and work through problems alone, it can be incredibly useful to seek outside help.
One route you may choose to go down is couples counselling - a form of talk therapy designed for those in a relationship. Alternatively our guide about relationship counselling offers a few tips / exercises to try first. However we do also offer advice about therapy in terms of what's to be expected, how long it take etc.
Relationship counselling is cheaper than divorce and you don't have to be on the edge of separation before you can benefit from couples counselling
Even the most secure personal relationships may start to crack under the strain of modern domestic and working life. Greater expectations and responsibilities, children, parents, work and other relationships can all impact on the way you and your partner relate to each other. Finding space just to be 'you' in your relationship can seem impossible and we are often faced with making compromises that seem to serve neither ourselves nor our partners.
Whether you are married, living together or living apart, gay or straight, old or young, in a new or well established partnership, relationship counselling and this guide can help you to find new ways of relating and listening to each other.
