The Quran (kor-AHN; Arabic: القرآن, romanized: al-Qurʼān Arabic pronunciation: [alqur'ʔaːn], literally meaning "the recitation"), also romanized Qur'an or Koran, is the central religious text of Islam, which Muslims believe to be a revelation from God (Allah). Slightly shorter than the New Testament, it is organized in 114 chapters (Arabic: سورة sūrah (Surah / Surat), plural سور suwar) — not according to chronology or subject matter, but according to length of surahs (with some exceptions). Surah are subdivided into verses / Ayah / Ayat / Ayaat / Aayat (Arabic: آية āyah, plural آيات āyāt).
Muslims believe that the Quran was orally revealed by God to the final prophet, Muhammad, through the archangel Gabriel (Jibril / jibrail), incrementally over a period of some 23 years. Muslims regard the Quran as Hazrat Muhammad's (PBUH) most important miracle, a proof of his prophethood, and the culmination of a series of divine messages starting with those revealed to Adam, including the Tawrah (Torah), the Zabur ("Psalms") and the Injil ("Gospel"), and ending with Hazrat Muhammad's (SAW) revelation. The word "Quraan" occurs some 70 times in the Quran's text, and other names and words are also said to refer to the Quran.
