Mahavir, also known as Vardhamāna, was the twenty-fourth and last Jain Tirthankara (ford maker, spiritual teacher). Mahavira was born into a royal family in what is now Bihar, India, in 540 BC. At the age of 30, he left his home in pursuit of spiritual awakening, and abandoned worldly things, including his clothes, and became a monk. For the next twelve-and-a-half years, Mahavir practiced intense meditation and severe penance, after which he became keval.
Mahavir Swami, the founder of the Panchsheel doctrine and the twenty-fourth pilgrimage of Jainism, was a formidable symbol of non-violence. Lord Mahavir was born in the era in which violence, animal sacrifice, caste-discrimination were dominated. He tried to show the world the right path through special teachings like truth, non-violence. Mahavir Jayanti is the most important Jain festival. It celebrates the birth of Saint Mahavir in a small town called Vaishali. The importance of the festival owes to the fact that Saint Mahavir was the founder of Jainism as a religion.
