The Korean language (Korean: 한국어, pronunciation: Hangugeo or 조선말, pronunciation: Chosŏnmal) is the language spoken on the Korean Peninsula, learn South Korean, and is an official language in both North and South Korea. Since the nineteenth century, due to the social and political change that Korea and the surrounding countries have undergone, the Korean language has become the language used by all ethnic Koreans in China (especially the "Yanbian" region), Japan, Russia (especially the regions of Sakhalin and Primorsky Krai), Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, America, Canada and others. During the Japanese occupation of Korea, the Japanese Empire attempted to pursue a policy of erasing Korean identity. There are about 78 million Korean speakers around the world.
