Kashmir Super League is Kashmir’s first international cricket league played on a foreign soil. MHKSL was launched in September 2015 by a bunch of expat Kashmiris working in Dubai. A few Kashmiri friends, chit chatting about cricket at a tea stall gave birth to the idea of having Kashmir’s own cricket league in Dubai, which is home to thousands of Kashmiris. In its first iteration, Kashmir Super League kicked off with 8 teams. The league has since grown and in this years edition, 14 teams will be vying for top honors. The team names have represented various neighborhoods in Kashmir, some names were chosen based upon Kashmiri heritage, some represented architectural importance and other areas of historical significance.
The basic premise of the league was primarily to provide the Kashmiri youth in UAE the platform to demonstrate their cricketing skills, something they would have otherwise been unable to do. By popular demand, the league allowed Kashmiri’s in GCC countries to participate as well. The league has allowed Kashmiris residing in UAE & GCC to come together, socialize, network and bind the community together and provide a means of association locally in UAE.
The first match of the tournament was played between Lal Bazar Lions and Khankah Gladiators in the first week of September 2015 in Ajman, Hamriyah ground. Initially KSL was not a hit but gradually it gained attention of the local Kashmiri diaspora and by leveraging strong social media presence, Kashmir Super League shortly became the talk of the town not only restricted to local Kashmiri residents of UAE and GCC, but also the popularity and following could be seen back in Kashmir. The league gained popularity very rapidly and gaining endorsements from Bollywood stars to international cricketers.
The final of KSL was played at Dubai International Cricket Academy between Safakadal Stars and Rajbagh royals. The final was witnessed by hundreds of spectators at the ground as well as thousands of viewers online as the match was streamed live online. Within a short period of time, KSL had turned into a major success in terms of popularity and fan following that kept players and fans wanting more.
The 2018-2019 season kicks off on Dec. 14th, 2018 at the Sevens cricket grounds in Dubai. Marina Home, the leading home fashion retail chain in GCC has kindly offered to sponsor the league this year as Marina Home Kashmir Super League 4 (MHKSL4).
