The caftan in Morocco is a historical garment that goes deep into the history of the successive sultans of the Kingdom of Morocco. The history of wearing the caftan goes back to the thirteenth century AD during the Marinid dynasty (1244-1465), when it was the preserve of members of the royal family. The Moroccan caftan differs from the Persian or the Ottoman, as it was a purely feminine dress, and with the passage of time, men gradually began to wear the caftan. Today, the term caftan is used only to describe a dress for women, as she became the only one who wore the caftan, while men moved towards wearing what is known as the djellaba.
