Ali Sardar Jafri was an Urdu writer from India. He was also a poet, critic and film lyricist.

Ali Sardar Jafri, Indian poet (born Nov. 29, 1913, Balrampur, Uttar Pradesh, India—died Aug. 1, 2000, Mumbai [Bombay], India), crafted progressive Urdu-language verse that expressed both his vehement anti-imperialist sentiments and his passion for social justice and religious tolerance. Jafri, whose many honors included the Jnanpith Award in 1998, published several volumes of poetry, as well as short stories, autobiographical essays, translations, literary criticism, and two plays. He also produced documentary films for television and the cinema.

29 नवंबर 1913 को उत्तर प्रदेश के गोंडा जिले के बलरामपुर में पैदा हुए अली सरदार जाफ़री के घर का माहौल तो ख़ालिस मज़हबी था, लेकिन सरदार छोटी उम्र में ही मर्सिया (शोक काव्य) कहने लगे थे। पेश है उनके कुछ चुनिंदा शेर.
उर्दू की तरक्की पसंद शायरी में एक अहम नाम है अली सरदार जाफ़री का। उनकी नज़्मों में आधुनिक जीवन की पेचीदगी जगह पाती है। उन्होंने लेखन के अलावा संपादन का भी बहुत उम्दा काम किया। उनके द्वारा संपादित मीर, ग़ालिब और कबीर की कविता पुस्तकें सबसे ज्यादा मशहूर हुईं। उन्हें भारतीय साहित्य के सवोर्च्च सम्मान 'ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार' से नवाजा गया।


Ali Sardar Jafri Poetry – Some people who left their impressions on the mind of people through their great work Ali Sardar Jafri is one of them. His efforts in Urdu Poetry will always remember in the chapter of Pakistani Urdu Poetry history. “Mera Safar” the well-recognized Urdu poem that was written by Ali Sardar Jafri a famous Urdu poet. Jafi Sahab was a freedom fighter, rebel, radical activist, critic and story-writer, but above all he was an amazing poet with delicate imagination. Ali Sardar Jafri Poetry considered the most prominent stars of Urdu poetry of 20th century. His poetry exhibited unraveling mysteries and ambiguity of human phenomena, therefore Ali Sardar Jafri Shayari comprise of the themes include compassion, love, perseverance and sensitivity. Khun Ki Lakir, Patthar Ki Divar, Pairahan-e-Sharar and Lahu Pukarta Hai among of his poetic works are notable both for their theme and style. He produced TV serial named as ‘Kahkashan’ based on the lives and works of seven notable of Urdu Poets. He has received Padma Shri, a higher Indian civilian award for his services to the Urdu literature. Ali Sardar Jafri Poem ‘Kaun Dushaman Hai’ was written in wake of war between India and Pakistan.


Sardar was a rebel, freedom fighter, pacifist, radical activist, story writer, critic and documentary filmmaker at once. But, above all, he was a poet endowed with exquisite imagination, one of the brightest stars on the firmament of 20th century Urdu poetry. Like all great poets he was a prophet engaged in unravelling the mysteries and ambiguity of human drama. The principal theme of his poetry was compassion, love, perseverance and sensitivity surviving amidst the callous inhumanity of our times. In his unique style, he depicted the exemplary survival of the human spirit in face of all-pervasive adversity and defeatism.


Among his other poetic works Khoon Ki Lakeer (1949), Ashia Jaag Uttha (1951), Patthar Ki Deewar (1953), Pairahan-e-Sharar (1966), Lahoo Pukarta Hai (1978) and November, Mera Gahwara (1998) are remarkable, both for their theme and style. He also made four documentaries, Phir Bolo Ai Sant Kabir being the most outstanding one. Besides, he produced a hugely popular TV serial, Kahkashan, based on the lives and works of seven luminaries of Urdu poetry – Hasrat, Josh, Firaq, Jigar, Faiz, Makhdoom and Majaz.
