हालांकि देवी भागवत में जहां 108 और देवी गीता में 72 शक्तिपीठों का ज़िक्र मिलता है, वहीं तन्त्रचूडामणि में 52 शक्तिपीठ बताए गए हैं। देवी पुराण में जरूर 51 शक्तिपीठों की ही चर्चा की गई है। इन 51 शक्तिपीठों में से कुछ विदेश में भी हैं और पूजा-अर्चना द्वारा प्रतिष्ठित हैं।.
