Description:

Post nasal-drip refers to the excessive production of phlegm in the throat. Normally, the throat is moistened by nasal secretions and mucus that help defend the body from infections. However, when the amount of liquid produced by the sinuses is reduced, the fluid thickens and it becomes disturbingly noticeable.

Many nasal problematic symptoms arise due to post-nasal drip. They usually depend on what triggered the drip. But be it simply an allergic reaction or a symptom of a more serious disease, post nasal drip can be very irritating. The irritated membrane of the nose can lead to difficulty in breathing and stuffy nose that may last throughout the day.

Blowing of the nose, no matter how hard doesn't help relieve congestion much. The nose may feel swollen and constant blowing can irritate the sensitive area of skin inside the nose. Also, the harder you blow your nose, the painful and more irritated your mucus membrane could become.

Don't worry though. You may alleviate post nasal drip symptoms by some hidden treasures found in the kitchen!

1. Salt Gargling ½ tablespoon of salt with a cup of water can help relieve sore throat.

2. Baking Soda If your excessive mucus secretions are getting extremely unbearable, baking soda can help clear them up. Mix 1 cup of warm water, 1 teaspoon salt and a pinch of baking soda. Use a nasal syringe, or whatever sterile substitute you can think of, to squirt the mixture to your nostrils. Tilt your head back, forward and to each side for ten seconds each to get the solution to your sinus cavities.

3. Water Drinking plenty of water has done plenty of wonders for the human body. And yes, it is a common defense against post nasal drip. Drink the recommended 8 glasses of water a day to keep your mucus thin and your body well hydrated. Remember that dehydration is one of the common causes of post nasal drip.

4. Kettle of boiling water. To keep the humidity high and stable in your house, keep a kettle of water on low boil.
