Ram Ganesh Gadkari (May 26, 1885 - January 23, 1919) was a Marathi poet, playwright, and humorist from Maharashtra, India.
Ram Ganesh Gadkari was one of the writers the in new age transformation in Marathi literature. He wrote poetry under the pen name Govindagraj and humorous articles under the pen name Balakram. He wrote plays under his legal name.
Marathi musicals are well-known. They are one of the earlier forms of theatre that still attract audiences. One such musical is ‘Ekach Pyala’ by Ram Ganesh Gadkari. One of the most famous plays of Marathi theatre, its popularity can be gauged from the fact that it was written around a hundred years ago.Five shows of this play will be hosted in Goa. The highlight of these staging is that veteran actor Jayant Sawarkar will perform the role of Taliram for the last time, a role he has reprised for the last three decades. Speaking at a press briefing held in the city, Sawarkar said that though the play was written in 1918, the story is contemporary in its nature, which is the reason behind its eternal popularity.
The play sees a devoted wife Sindhu speaking about the issue of alcoholism. Her husband Sudhakar is an alcoholic. Originally ‘Ekach Pyala’ was performed with Balgandharva as Sindhu.
The play will be staged on May 20 at 9.30 p.m. at Ravindra Bhavan, Sanquelim, May 21 at 9.30 p.m. Ravindra Bhavan, Baina, Vasco, May 22 at 9.30 p.m. at Ravindra Bhavan, Sanvordem-Curchorem and on May 23 at 3 p.m. at Kala Academy, Panaji and at 9.30 p.m. at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.

Ram Ganesh Gadkari was one of the writers in new age transformation in Marathi literature. He wrote poetry under the pen name Govindagraj and humorous articles under the pen name Balakram. He wrote plays under his legal name.
Till 19 years of his age, he was unable to speak Marathi. Afterwards, he read and studied Marathi, Sanskrit, and English literature extensively. He critically studied particularly the works of Sanskrit playwrights Kalidas and Bhavabhuti; modern Marathi poets of his era Keshavasuta and Shripad Krushna Kolhatkar; Marathi poets of earlier times like Dnyaneshwar and Moropant; and English writers like Shakespeare, Percy Shelley, and Mark Twain.
Celebrated playwright, Vijay Tendulkar considers Gadkari the greatest poet-dramatist in any Indian language, after Kalidas. Similarly, another prominent Marathi literary figure, Acharya Atre, considered Gadkari’s contribution to Marathi literature, and in particular Marathi drama, of the highest order. He was associated with Kirloskar Natak Company.
There was some speculation that his play Ekach Pyala was based on his personal and real experience, but Acharya Atre has convincingly demolished this speculation in his own autobiographical works and has stated that the one obsession that Gadkari had in his entire life was literature. It is to be noted here that Acharya Atre knew Gadkari fairly intimately, and therefore this assertion has a reasonable basis.
