Surat al-Fajr (Arabic: سورة الفجر, “The Dawn”, “Daybreak”) is the eighty-ninth chapter (sura) of the Quran with 30 verses. This Surah is positioned in Para 30 which is also known as Juz Amma (Juz' 30). The sorat describes destruction of disbelieving peoples: the Ancient Egyptians, the people of Iram of the Pillars, and Mada'in Saleh. It condemns those who love wealth and look with disdain upon the poor and orphans. Righteous people are promised Paradise – the final verse says "And enter you My Paradise!". The Surah (sorah) is so designated after the word wal-fajr with which it opens.
Surah Al-Fajr in hadith / hadees:
Hadis (حديث) is literally "speech"; recorded saying or tradition of Muhammad (ﷺ) validated by isnad; with sira these comprise the sunnah and reveal shariah. Hadith has been called "the backbone" of Islamic civilization, and within that religion, the authority of hadith as a source for religious law and moral guidance ranks second only to that of the Qur'an. This surah appears in a hadith that recommend its recitation in Salah (salat / solat / namaz).
It was narrated that Jabir said:"Muadh stood up and prayed Isha', and made it lengthy. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'Do you want to cause hardship to the people, O Mu'adh; do you want to cause hardship to the people O Mu'adh? Why didn't you recite 'Glorify the Name of your Lord Most High' or Ad-Dhuha or; 'When the heaven is cleft asunder?"
Imam Jafar as-Sadiq (a.s.) urged believers to recite Surah Al-Fajar in their prayers as it is the Surah of Imam Hussain (a.s.) and the one who recites it often will be in the company of Imam Husayn (a.s.) on the Day of Judgement.
It is narrated from the Holy Prophet (Sal Allaho Alehi Wasallam) that the one who recites this Surah, Allah (S.W.T.) will forgive his sins amounting to ten times the number of people who recite this Surah. On the Day of Reckoning he will have a shining light. If this Surah is written as a talisman and then tied to one’s back, after which he goes into his wife, then Allah (S.w.T.) will give him a child who will be a means of pride and blessings for him.
Regarding the virtue of studying this Surah, a tradition from the Prophet (S) says:
"Allah forgives the mistakes of whoever recites, Surah Fajr, on the 'Ten Nights', (i.e., the first ten nights of Zul Hajj), and it will become a light on Dooms Day for the one who recites it at other times ((of the year)”.
Also, a tradition from Imam Sadiq (as) says:
"Recite Surah Fajr, which is Husain-ibn-Ali's Surah, in your prayers, whether they be obligatory or optional. He who recites it will be with him (Husain ibn Ali) at the same place in Heaven on the Day of Judgement".
Introducing this Surah as Husain-ibn-Ali's Surah may be for the reason that the clear example of the 'serene soul' as mentioned at the end of the Surah, is Husain-ibn-Ali (as), as the idea has also been cited from Imam Sadiq (as) about the same verses.
Or, perhaps, it is for the same reason that one of the commentaries about the 'Ten Nights' means the first ten nights of Muharram, (the first month of the Muslim new year), which is closely relevant to Husain-ibn-Ali (as).
At any rate, these great rewards and outstanding merits are for the ones who recite the Surah as a preparation for their own self-improvement and self-perfection.
