According to the Islamic faith, Abraham (Arabic: إِبْرَاهِيْمُ, romanized: ʾIbrāhīm pronounced [ʔɪbraːˈhiːm]) was a prophet and messenger of God, and an ancestor to the Ishmaelite Arabs and Israelites. Abraham plays a prominent role as an example of faith in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. In Muslim belief, Abraham fulfilled all the commandments and trials wherein God nurtured him throughout his lifetime. As a result of his unwavering faith in God, Abraham was promised by God to be a leader to all the nations of the world. The Quran extols Abraham as a model, an exemplar, obedient and not an idolater. In this sense, Abraham has been described as representing "primordial man in universal surrender to the Divine Reality before its fragmentation into religions separated from each other by differences in form".: 18  Muslims believe that the Kaaba in Mecca was built by Abraham and his son Ishmael as the first house of worship on earth. The Islamic holy day 'Eid ul-Adha is celebrated in commemoration of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son on God's command, as well as the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to the Kaaba.

Muslims believe that Abraham, also known as Khalilullah (Arabic: خليل الله Trans: friend of God ), became the leader of the righteous in his time and that it was through him that Adnanite-Arabs and Israelites came. Abraham, in the belief of Islam, was instrumental in cleansing the world of idolatry at the time. Paganism was cleared out by Abraham in both the Arabian peninsula and Canaan. He spiritually purified both places as well as physically sanctifying the houses of worship. Abraham and Isma'il (Ishmael) further established the rites of pilgrimage, or Ḥajj ('Pilgrimage'), which are still followed by Muslims today. Muslims maintain that Abraham further asked God to bless both the lines of his progeny, of Isma'il and Isḥaq (Isaac), and to keep all of his descendants in the protection of God.

The Story of Qurbani

Ibrahim (as) was childless for many years before he and Hajar (as) were blessed with Ismail (as).

Ismail (as) was the first of his two sons and the fulfilment of a promise Allah (swt) made to his Prophet many years ago – that his descendants would be as plentiful as the stars in the sky above him.

But Allah (swt) willed to test Ibrahim (as). When his son was old enough to walk, Ibrahim (as) had a dream. In it, he sacrificed Ismail (as).

The Prophet had the same dream on three consecutive nights before he understood it to be a divine command and not a trick of the devil. Ibrahim (as) told his young son about the dream and Ismail (as) replied:

Oh my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast. -The Holy Qur’an 37:102

Both father and son submitted to Allah’s (swt) command and set off to Mina. While preparing to carry out the sacrifice, Prophet Ibrahim heard the following revelation:

We called to him, “O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision. Indeed, we thus reward the doers of good. Indeed, this was a clear trial.” -The Holy Qur’an 37:104

Allah (swt) replaced Ismail’s (as) with a magnificent beast and willed that Ibrahim (as) complete the intention of the sacrifice.

And we ransomed him with a great sacrifice. And we left for him [favourable mention] among later generations. Peace be upon Ibraham. -The Holy Qur’an 37:107
