Smoothie is a dense and creamy drink made from puree raw fruits, vegetables and sometimes dairy products such as milk, yogurt, ice cream or cottage cheese, usually using a blender. A smoothie containing dairy products is similar to a milkshake, although it usually contains less fruit and often uses ice cream or frozen yogurt. Mixing kiwi into a green smoothie helps brighten the taste without adding a heap of calories, especially when there is enough greenery.
The health of a smoothie depends on its components and their proportions. Many smoothies include large or more portions of fruits and vegetables that are recommended in a healthy diet and are designed to replace nutrition. However, fruit juice containing a high amount of sugar can increase caloric intake and promote weight gain. Similar ingredients such as protein powder, sweeteners or ice cream are often used in smoothie recipes, some of which mostly contribute to taste and other caloric intake.
Green smoothie usually consists of 40-50% green vegetables (about half), usually raw green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, Swiss chard, collared vegetables, celery, parsley or broccoli, the remaining ingredients are mostly or completely fruity. Prodnegra and spirulina are also used as healthy ingredients. Most green leafy vegetables have a raw bitter taste when served, but this can be chosen by choosing less bitter vegetables (e.g. baby spinach) or combining with certain fruits (e.g. banana softens taste and texture).
