Metamorphic rocks arise from pre-existing igneous or sedimentary rocks under the influence of heat, pressure and active chemical solutions. This transformation occurs when the natural and chemical conditions to which the rocks are exposed change, making many of the minerals that make up the rock are unstable to the new conditions and thus turn into new minerals that are more suitable for the new environment.
