वेद ईश्वर द्वारा ऋषियों को सुनाए गए ज्ञान पर आधारित है इसीलिए इसे श्रुति कहा गया है। सामान्य भाषा में वेद का अर्थ होता है ज्ञान। वेद पुरातन ज्ञान विज्ञान का अथाह भंडार है। इसमें मानव की हर समस्या का समाधान है। वेदों में ब्रह्म (ईश्वर), देवता, ब्रह्मांड, ज्योतिष, गणित, रसायन, औषधि, प्रकृति, खगोल, भूगोल, धार्मिक नियम, इतिहास, रीति-रिवाज आदि लगभग सभी विषयों से संबंधित ज्ञान भरा पड़ा है।.

The Sanskrit term veda as a common noun means "knowledge", but can also be used to refer to fields of study unrelated to liturgy or ritual, in agenda-veda "medical science", sasya-veda "science of agriculture" or sarpa-veda "science of snakes". Ayurveda means "with bad knowledge, ignorant"
