MATLAB (matrix laboratory) is a multi-paradigm numerical computing environment and fourth-generation programming language. A proprietary programming language developed by MathWorks, MATLAB allows matrix manipulations, plotting of functions and data, implementation of algorithms, creation of user interfaces, and interfacing with programs written in other languages, including C, C++, C#, Java, Fortran and Python.

About the application:
Digital signal processing (DSP) is the most powerful technologies that will shape science and engineering in the 21st century. One of the important DSP applications is digital filter.
Various methods of filter designing and analysis have been developed over past three decades. Digital filters are playing a very important role in DSP. Filter designing is the process of transformation of input sequence to obtain desired output sequence. Filter designing process can be described as an optimization problem where each requirement terms to an error function which should be minimized. Digital filter are of two types, Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter and Infinite Impulse response (IIR) filter.

The Fourier transform decomposes a function of time (a signal) into the frequencies that make it up, in a way similar to how a musical chord can be expressed as the frequencies (or pitches) of its constituent notes. The Fourier transform of a function of time itself is a complex-valued function of frequency, whose absolute value represents the amount of that frequency present in the original function, and whose complex argument is the phase offset of the basic sinusoid in that frequency.
