Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, often referred as the 'Tansen' of 20th century, was one of the greatest classical vocalists of India.Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was born in Kasur a small town near Lahore on April 2, 1902.He Khan was undeniably one of the most talented vocalists of his time.
His father Ali Baksh Khan was a well-known sarangi player and a vocalist.When India was partitioned in 1947, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan went to his home in Lahore. Thereafter, he returned back to India and settled here. In 1957, he got the citizenship of India.
He had an inclination of looking beyond the traditional method of toning a musical note to derive the perfect melody. This was usually achieved by very subtle modulation of notes. This tact was innate in Bade Ghulam Ali, he had the knack of playing with musical notations and find the perfect expression and melody.
He started his musical career by playing sarangi and singing some compositions of his uncle, Kale Khan. He became a famous vocalist after his first concert in 1938, in Calcutta, now known as Kolkata. He became a great proponent of Thumri and made certain innovations to it.
