The graduate record examination (GRE) is a standardized exam that assesses an individual's ability to think abstractly in the fields of analytical writing, mathematics, and vocabulary. Many graduate institutions in the United States and Canada use the GRE to determine an applicant's eligibility for the program. The GRE is now predominantly administered via computer; but, in regions where sufficient computer networks do not exist, a paper-based exam may be administered.
The GRE is divided into three portions that assess verbal and quantitative reasoning, as well as critical writing skills.
- The verbal reasoning section, among other things, assesses the test taker's ability to make inferences, differentiate major and relevant points, and comprehend words and sentences. It is designed to assess the ability of the test taker to analyze and evaluate written material. This section also assesses their ability to process information gleaned from written material as well as see and analyze relationships between various elements of sentences.
- In the quantitative section, the test taker's ability to resolve problems is assessed using geometry, data analysis, and algebra concepts. Test takers must solve mathematical problems as well as interpret and analyze quantitative data.
- The final section assesses the test taker's critical thinking and analytical writing abilities, namely how well they can explain complicated ideas and give appropriate support for those notions.
The current score scale for the verbal and quantitative sections is 130-170, scored in one-point increments. The analytical writing section is scored 0-6 in half-point increments. The ETS has provided the mean scores for each section of the GRE based on all test takers from July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019, which are as follows:
• Verbal Reasoning: 150.4
• Quantitative Reasoning: 153.4
• Analytical Writing: 3.58
